“You gotta let it sizzle.” – Looking back at Michael Jackson’s This Is It

My dad put on Michael Jackson’s This is It quickly tonight, and I was reminded just of how surprising this film is, how unsentimental or not deliberate it is. There is no talking heads getting teary over Jackson’s death, no dramatic footage of struggles in dressing rooms, rather, it’s about one thing – what a powerful performer, a force of nature Jackson was. What could have been a manipulative cash grab, looking for tears through interviews added in before the films release, is instead a tribute, only salvaging the pieces of an insane production no one got to see, and that’s it. It’s about the work, the music, not only from Jackson, but from the many other talented people who gave this their all.
