Nebraska (2013)

Every year, when the Best Picture category is announced, there always seems to be a checklist of stereotypes that the nominees slot themselves into. Technically masterful film? Check. Message-y period piece? Check. Flashy crowd pleaser that voters pretend is a masterpiece? Check. Then there’s always that one film that no one really sees coming – quiet, unassuming, and mostly lingering in the background – and this year that film is Nebraska. An indie drama shot in black and white, populated with senior citizens – on the surface it looks like a hard sell. But Nebraska is a comfortably heartwarming surprise that makes for a perfectly nice trip to the movies.
