Valentine’s Day films serve a very specific purpose. Date night placeholders for a day of the year equally loved and loathed, it’s also nicely nestled in the midst of a month that doesn’t have the greatest track record in terms of quality cinema releases – as everyone is preoccupied with Oscar hungry pedigree films. Winter’s Tale serves its purposes as a derivative romance well enough; it’s a fantastical love story that hits all of the preordained marks. But a good film it is absolutely not.
